Fairplain Union is a non-denominational congregation of believers dedicated to reverencing God's love through worship, ministry, and fellowship.

Our Mission

The U is dedicated to proclaiming the Gospel of Christ and the beliefs of the Christian Faith, to maintaining the excited worship of God, and to inspiring in all persons a love for Christ, a passion for righteousness, and a consciousness of their duties to God, fellow believers, and non-believers. The U pledges to demonstrate His spirit through worship, witnessing, fellowship, and ministry, and to serving the needs of people in the church, the community, and the world.

Our call from Christ is to serve others through Him. To disregard this direction is to forsake the foundations of our creation.
— Todd King, Pastor

Our Story

In the spring of 1853, a group of Christian friends in Fairplain, West Virginia, analyzed the needs of their community.  The area had a mercantile store, a pharmacy, a lodge hall, a blacksmith, and many families--there was no school or church.

In an effort to serve this need, a landowner granted to three trustees "and their successors forever, for the purpose of erecting a schoolhouse which is also for the use of all Christian denominations."

The schoolhouse and the land on which it set operated as a church and a school until 1867, when the land was deeded to the Board of Education.  And in 1890, a separate plat of land was deeded to the trustees of the United Brethren in Christ, Methodist Protestant, and Methodist Episcopal Church of South Fairplain to be serviced by circuit-

riding preachers from these different sects.

In 1959, a building fund was started by a $5,000 donation by one generous individual.  The new church was completed in 1964.

In 1981, the United Methodist Church trustees deeded back to the church and trustees of Fairplain Union Church the land and the buildings.  At that time, the trustees named the establishment "Fairplain Union Church" and dedicated it to serve "all Christians of all denominations."

Since its inception in 1853, Fairplain Union Church and its predecessors have strived to serve Christians of all denominations by providing a sanctuary for worship, ministry, and fellowship.
